Understanding the Side Effects of Tianeptine

You may have heard of tianeptine for its use in dietary supplements in other countries around the world, but what is it?

If you don’t know what it is, tianeptine is an atypical antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, and anxiety. It is usually prescribed in Latin America, Asia, and some European countries, while in the United States, it is not approved as a dietary supplement or prescription drug.

So what are the side effects of taking pure tianeptine? Read on to find out about it.

Insomnia and Nightmares

Having insomnia and/or nightmares are a very common side effect of taking tianeptine. This is because taking pure tianeptine is similar to taking other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) drugs. To minimize the effects of this, consider taking some melatonin supplements to counteract the medication and help you sleep at night.

Weight Gain

Like other antidepressants, there is also a good chance that you will gain weight as a side effect of taking tianeptine.

Do not worry about it. The good thing about it is that the gain will not last in the long term. It will only last as long as your body and metabolic system are trying to get used to the supplement.

Even though the weight gain may be tough to deal with, the benefits of taking tianeptine supplements outweigh the risk of gaining a few pounds.

Difficulty Breathing

While this is a side effect that may happen only if you take a high dosage of the substance, it is one that you need to keep an eye on. If it gets more severe the more you take it, you should stop using tianeptine as soon as possible.

A Word of Warning

Because of its opioid-like effects, many tianeptine users have been prone to addiction and abuse of it. If taken over a long period of time, users will likely experience tianeptine withdrawal. If you take too much of it at one time, the chance of overdosing on it and dying is very high.

While it is marketed in other countries, the FDA in the United States classifies it as an illegal substance because of its addictive nature. You should never take it by IV under any circumstances.

Think About Tianeptine Side Effects

The side effects of tianeptine can seem innocuous if you take small amounts of it, but it is a substance you have to take special care of. Be sure to take the correct dosage that your doctor gives you in order to experience the maximum effect. Just remember: if you think that the side effects you experience are more serious or causing allergy-like reactions, you should head to an emergency room immediately.
